Why I Wrote This Book

Coqui Illustrationby Melanie Mercado

It started with three words: “C de Coquí.”
I was driving when the phrase popped into my head, and it kept repeating in my mind like a little chant. I grabbed a notebook at a red light and began writing down the alphabet—leaving space for each letter to be filled with a Puerto Rican word. I called my dad and we started brainstorming together, word by word, memory by memory.

What began as a fun idea became something much deeper—a way to reconnect with my childhood, honor my late mother, and preserve the cultural magic that shaped me. My mom loved showing us every corner of Puerto Rico—like a tour guide of the island’s heart. With this book, I wanted to pass on that same love of language, places, and flavors to the next generation.

The Puerto Rican ABCs is for families in the diaspora and on the island, for parents teaching their children where they come from, and for little ones learning who they are. It’s a book, yes—but more than that, it’s a keepsake of love, culture, and memory.
